Resume Length by Experience Level

Student / Recent Graduate (0–1 year)

1 page · 350–500 words

One page is standard. Focus on education, internships, projects, and transferable skills. Do not pad with irrelevant information.

Early Career (1–5 years)

1 page · 450–700 words

One page is still preferred. By now you should have enough relevant experience to fill a page without padding.

Mid-Career (5–10 years)

1–2 pages · 600–900 words

Two pages is acceptable. Focus on the last 10 years. Older roles can be listed with minimal detail or omitted.

Senior Professional (10+ years)

2 pages · 800–1,100 words

Two pages is standard. Do not go beyond two pages for private sector roles. Prioritize recent and relevant experience.

Executive / C-Suite

2 pages · 900–1,200 words

Two pages remains the standard even at executive level. An executive bio or board profile is separate from a resume.

Resume Length FAQs

How long should a resume be for an entry-level job?

For entry-level candidates (0–2 years experience), one page is strongly preferred. You simply do not have enough relevant experience to justify two pages. Focus on education, internships, projects, and key skills. Hiring managers appreciate brevity from early-career candidates.

Should a resume ever be 3 pages?

Almost never for standard jobs. A 3-page resume is only appropriate for academic CVs, executive bios, or federal government applications. For private sector roles, keep it to 1–2 pages maximum. Hiring managers spend an average of 7 seconds on initial resume scans.

How many bullet points should each job have?

Use 3–5 bullet points per role for recent positions, and 2–3 for older ones. Each bullet should describe an achievement, not a duty. Prioritize impact: what did you accomplish, and what was the measurable result? More bullets do not mean a stronger resume.

Does a longer resume help or hurt?

A longer resume almost always hurts beyond 2 pages. More content dilutes your strongest points. Hiring managers often skim, so important achievements buried on page 3 are effectively invisible. The goal is a dense, impactful 1–2 page document — not a comprehensive career history.
